Operating lights How should an operating room be lit?

Lighting in an operating room is considered one of the key elements for the success of surgical procedures carried out by doctors. This lighting is done through the operating lamps that are special lamps designed to illuminate the surgical area, thus providing a bright and uniform illumination focused on the operating table during the surgical act.

Operating lights have the main function of providing adequate lighting during a surgical procedure. The light of these lamps is white since in the operating room the doctor needs to be able to observe the color of any organ or tissue, as this is an indicator of the patient’s state and health. This type of lamps can in turn provide hours of bright light without excessively heating the patient or the health personnel involved in the operation.

Operating lamps according to the type of light they emit

Halogen lamps

They are made with halogen gas and quartz glass. They are incandescent and offer a very intense and bright white light. For a long time, they were the best operating room lighting on the market.

Among its advantages, it should be noted that, with a higher electrical current, they offer greater lighting and, therefore, a clearer image is obtained for the vision of the operating table where the surgeon and the entire medical team work. Another advantage offered by this type of lamp is that it reduces energy consumption. Among their disadvantages, it can be mentioned that they raise the temperature in the area where they are used and can also suffer untimely blackouts, which is a risk for patients and an inconvenience for surgeons who can get hot, sweat or, worse still, lose, even for a short time, the correct lighting of the area.

LED lamps

LED lamps provide an intense white light without shadows, thus providing optimal lighting in the operating room for the work carried out by surgeons and their team. These lamps have a light-emitting diode, which distributes the flow of electrical current in a single direction, so that electricity is used much more efficiently and very little is needed to achieve powerful lighting in the operating room.

Like halogen lamps, the light is more intense with more electric current. But these LED lamps do not get hot and do not generate as much heat. Another advantage of this type of operation lamps is that they can be touched by hand without the risk of burning, and that they have a much longer lifespan.

Operation lamps depending on mounting configuration

The operating lamps can be placed on the ceiling, wall or on the floor. Depending on the model of the lamp.
