Types of surgical operating table

The surgical operating table is a specialized type of table that is used in the medical operating room to position the patient during surgical intervention. They have a main platform, on which the patient can sit or go to bed and can be divided into several sections, and a central base that allows adjusting the height and inclination of the table.

The height and inclination of the sections of the table can be adjusted for a greater comfort of the surgeon at the time of the operation. In addition, the table allows a multitude of accessories to provide an additional clamping for the patient.

The standard operating tables have postural controls to be manipulated, flexed or extended to the desired position. Some tables have a metallic crossbar or a body elevator between the two upper sections that can be raised for vesicle or kidney interventions.

A first distinction is made in the field of surgical tables, that is, between the universal surgical tables and the tables of special surrender, which in turn decline in different models, depending on the specialties.

Tables of universal surgical operations

For general, digestive and minor surgery. They are very versatile and adapt to most cardiovascular, vesic, cosmetic surgery, among others.

Special surgical operations tables

For one or more medical specialties. They are distinguished by their configuration and / or by their specific accessories. For instance:

  • Gynecological surgical tables: allow a sedent or decubitus position, with Göpel-type footrests.
  • Orthopedic surgical tables: They tend to support footrests and traction racks. They have been designed to facilitate intervention and maneuverability and allow the surgeon easily move the patient.
  • Ophthalmological surgical tables: are convertible tables with a specific headrest for patient positioning.

Technical criteria to be taken into account using a surgical operating table

  • Size and available space: The dimensions of the table and the space needed depending on its different positions. The position of the patient varies according to the type of surgery, hence the importance of taking into account the different movements of the table.
  • Power mode: In the case of electrical tables, for example, a fence source will be needed.
  • Compatibility of accessories: It will be necessary to check the compatibility of the table with the different accessories depending on the applications; Among them are the footrests, the traction racks or the pockets.
  • Security: patient safety is the most important. It will be essential to take into account the antibacterial, antifungal and flame retardant properties of the table surface. Without forgetting the maximum load that the table can withstand, in particular to avoid any risk of falling from patients with obesity.
