Anesthesia Machine: Do You Measure Dose Ranges?

In general, anesthesia machines are medical equipment used to administer an anesthetic agent to a patient during a surgical procedure. This anesthetized agent, among other things, inhibits the functioning of skeletal muscles. The diaphragm is the main muscle on inhalation. If this is inhibited, there will be a need to artificially ventilate the patient.

Anesthesia machines perform a very important job in health centers. Its use is essential for some procedures that require supplying anesthetic gases to patients and monitoring their breathing throughout the process. This device has a very important effect on the surgical process, and creates optimal and safe conditions for surgeons’ work. Modern anesthesia machines allow you to control a number of vital functions and even calculate dose ranges in particular:

  • Heart rate;
  • Airway pressure;
  • Oxygen concentration and flow;
  • Automatic ventilation of the patient’s lungs.

 How does an anesthesia machine work?

The whole process begins with taking the medical gases (oxygen, nitrous oxide, and medical air) from the wall of the operating room or in reserve tanks located in the same machine. These gases pass through a series of sensors to verify adequate pressures and flows. Later, they go to the vaporizer where the gases mix with the anesthetic agent. A series of more sensors (to avoid excess or lack of gases), and the gas reaches the tube in “Y”. A branch of the “Y” contains the air to be inspired and enters the patient. When it exhales, the exhaled air goes through the other branch of the “Y”. From here, the air can be reused or sucked in. If it is reused, it passes through a CO2 absorbent to avoid CO2 poisoning and returns to circulation. If there is more anesthetic in the tube than is needed or is required to modify any pressure or flow, it goes through a suction line.

What are the main features of an anesthesia machine?

Anesthesia machines are high-precision equipment that must guarantee the supply of an exact amount of gas in order not to compromise the health of the patient. They are a product of innovation in mechanics, engineering and electronics, and must have these main characteristics:

  • A source of O2 (dioxygen or oxygen gas) and a form of CO2 removal.
  • A source of liquids or gases for anesthesia.
  • An inhalation system (cylinders, yokes, valves, flow meters, pressure gauges, and so on).

When choosing anesthesia machines for your health center, keep in mind that they must offer the possibility of monitoring the condition of your patient to guarantee full functionality to anesthesiologists and other medical professionals involved in the procedure.
