Surgical lamps are special lamps designed to illuminate the operating room area, thus allowing optimal visualization of small, low-contrast objects at varying depths in incisions and body cavities. Its main purpose is to provide adequate lighting during a surgical procedure.
The light of the lamps must be white since in the operating room the doctor needs to be able to observe the color of any organ or tissue since this is an indicator of the patient’s state and health. These lamps must also not generate infrared (IR) or ultraviolet (UV) radiation as it can cause damage or injury to body tissue that is exposed during the surgical operation.
There are several types of surgical lights that can be installed within an operating room, among them we can mention the following:
Incandescent lights
They are a type of lamps that emit energy as electromagnetic radiation. This type of lamps can be in turn of two types:
Incandescent halogen lamps
They are manufactured with halogen gas and quartz glass. They are incandescent and offer a very intense and bright white light. For years, they were the best operating room lighting on the market. It is the closest thing to the traditional incandescent lamp that used to be used in the domestic environment. Among its advantages, it stands out that, the greater the electric current, the greater the illumination and, therefore, a sharper image for the vision of the operating table where the surgeon and the entire medical team work. Another point in favor of this type of lamp is that it reduces energy consumption. Among their disadvantages, it can be mentioned that they raise the temperature in the area where they are used and they can also suffer inopportune blackouts, which represents a risk for patients and an inconvenience for surgeons who can get hot, sweat or, worse, lose, even for a short time, the correct lighting of the area.
Non-halogen incandescent lamps
These are a type of lamp that can contain an inert gas and are used in the operating room with a luminous efficacy of 10-15 lm / W and a duration of 1,000 hours.
Led lights
These types of lamps provide an intense white light without shadows, thus providing optimal lighting in the operating room. Its operation revolves around the diode, which distributes the flow of electrical current in a single direction, so that electricity is used much more efficiently and very little of it is needed to achieve powerful lighting in the operating room. Like halogen lamps, the light is more intense with more electrical current.
One of its advantages is that these types of lamps do not heat up and do not generate as much heat. Another advantage of this type of surgical light is that it can be touched by hand without the risk of burning. All these advantages offered by LED lamps for operating rooms offer greater safety and comfort within the operating room. They have a much longer useful life.
Gas discharge lights
This type of lamp works through irradiation as a result of the excitation of a gas that is subjected to electric discharges. They emit a very white light that takes a few minutes to obtain its maximum performance.
