How does an oxygen concentrator work?

An oxygen concentrator is a device that sucks in the air from the environment that surrounds us and separates the oxygen from the other gases that make up the air through molecular filters, thus managing to supply up to 96% pure oxygen, these filters retain oxygen and expels the rest of the air, moistens it and sends it to the patient, appropriately according to their requirements. By generating it, it allows the generation of oxygen at a rate of 5 liters per minute.

Operation of an oxygen concentrator

The oxygen concentrator absorbs the ambient air by means of a small electric compressor through a series of filters. Compressed air passes through two molecular sieve chambers to remove nitrogen.

The discarded gas returns to the air harmlessly and the process repeats. The patient then receives oxygen through a nasal cannula or mask. So you have an uninterrupted supply of oxygen when you need it at the push of a button. This supply is available 24 hours a day.

An oxygen concentrator is the most reliable, efficient, and convenient source of supplemental oxygen available today. The equipment allows to have a high purity oxygen supplement.

In general, they should preferably be placed where the patient spends most of their time. It should be a dry, well-ventilated area, in which it does not receive direct sunlight, nor that, in the event of rain, it can get wet or splash. It must be at least 15 m from any surface such as wall or furniture. Also, it should be located away from any hot surfaces or heat sources.

What is an oxygen concentrator for?

This equipment is used to provide low-flow oxygen therapy to patients with respiratory failure. This treatment delivers oxygen in concentrations higher than those found in ambient air to treat or prevent symptoms of hypoxia.

Advantages of an oxygen concentrator

  • Unlike oxygen tanks that have a limited charge, the oxygen concentrator is unlimited.
  • The concentrator offers continuous oxygen as long as it has available air and a power supply to allow it to function.
  • Thanks to their design, they are easy to transport, unlike heavy oxygen tanks. It requires little energy. For maintenance, it is sufficient to periodically wash the humidifier container.
