A water distiller is currently a basic instrument for every laboratory. The product obtained from this instrument is distilled water, water that has been purified from any type of impurity through a controlled process of vaporization and cooling, distilled water being the ideal type of water to carry out most of the processes that take place in laboratories.
This equipment allows obtaining water with a high level of purity, from drinking water. Distilled water is characterized by lack of suspended solids and is used in multiple applications within laboratories. The distiller copies the process of the water cycle.
Operation of a water distiller
As mentioned above, the operation of a distiller is based on the water cycle that occurs naturally in the environment. The energy that comes from the sun heats the water of the seas and transforms part of it into water vapor. This vapor then concentrates on clouds and then cools and condenses, returning to the surface in the form of rain.
The water distiller reproduces this natural cycle. In other words, the distiller heats the water to remove any impurity; condensing it. This water vapor does not escape into the atmosphere, on the contrary, it is stored in a condenser that returns it to its liquid state. Its configuration and design vary depending on the volumes of water required.
Parts of a water distiller and its operation
- Steam generator: It is the vessel where the water reaches its boiling point; This means that it can withstand temperatures of 100°C. They are constantly filled to give continuity to the distillate process. It is also known as a boiling tank. This is where the water to be distilled is stored. It usually has a hydraulic attack that allows to replenish the water that evaporates and distils. It is usually made of glass in small distillers or stainless steel, tin-coated copper or titanium in large capacity distillers. Thermal energy is generated by electrical immersion resistors, through direct conduction. This causes the water temperature to increase, until, under normal conditions (atmospheric pressure equal to an atmosphere, and acceleration of gravity equal to 9.80665 m/s2), the liquid phase water is transformed into vapor phase water at 100 °C.
- Water level: It is a device that allows regulating the amount of water inside the steam generator. It is directly connected to the onslaught that supplies the water used by the distiller.
- Only four control keys allow quick operational readiness to enhance the user experience
- Everything else is automatically managed by the integrated microprocessor control system.
- PIN code access to the software snap points prevents unauthorized changes to the operation or tuning system.
