What are the sides effects of anesthesia?

Penetrating surgical pain is probably the most common pain in the hospital environment, and to avoid it, patients are given anesthetic drugs to block pain. It plays an essential role in the functional outcome of surgery, and in the reduction of surgical morbidity and mortality. Anesthesia has decreased the response to stress, but leaving side effects in patients.

However, anesthesia alone has already been described as a specific risk state. During the process, the patient is subjected to injection or inhalation of drugs with potential adverse effects. The induced state of unconsciousness brings with it the risk of aerial obstruction, lung contamination and the inability to detect peripheral lesions. Finally, neuromuscular blockade and loss of self-control of autonomic responses make the patient dependent on mechanical ventilation and the anesthesiologist and his team.

Main Side Effects from the Use of Anesthesia

There are many patients, who have to experience different surgical procedures every day and they are concerned about the side effects of anesthesia, which usually appear in different ways:

  • General anesthesia causes a coma-like state in a matter of seconds, which is accessed in patients undergoing surgery. Once asleep, they are not able to feel any sensory or sensory stimuli.
  • Digestive, respiratory, and neurological function are activated to produce some of the most common side effects of general anesthesia. In addition, detoxification and excretion of medication often also results in detoxification.
  • The most common effects are nausea, vomiting, weakness, and pain. They tend to affect up to 30 % of the patients
  • It causes stomach or headache, black stools, yellowing of the eyes or skin, and weakness in the lower and upper limbs.
  • They may experience noticeable weight loss and alterations in blood pressure.
  • It causes cognitive problems after one week of the operation, showing itself as attention and concentration problems.

Most of the time, it is given intravenously, although there are isolated cases. Particularly in children, the airway (gas) is often used to help them sleep, although it has a much smaller analgesic effect. In these cases, other analgesic drugs such as morphine are also administered.

Duration of the Effects of Anesthesia

Generally, each patient is different and tolerates anesthesia in different ways, usually decrease the passage of a few hours or just a couple of days. In fact, most patients return to their activities in just a couple of hours. In children, activities requiring coordination and balance should be monitored during the subsequent 24 hours. If side effects last more than two weeks after surgery, it is essential to consult a specialist doctor.

With respect to long-term effects, there are no exact responses, although at present, general anesthesia is beginning to relate to cognitive impairment. Also, there are certain side effects involved, which will depend on the patient’s condition and there will always be chances of experiencing them. It can stimulate serious side effects, such as being conscious during the surgical process, after the effects of anesthesia have ceased, for example in patients with serious injuries who have suffered accidents, it can occur that you wake up during the surgery, without being fully conscious.

This situation can be really unpleasant with long-term consequences. In most cases patients can not move through the relaxants and this causes stress and panic at the time. In the long term, it can cause anxiety, sleep disturbances, nightmares, retrospective scenes of the event, post-traumatic stress disorder and fear of anesthesia. However, the percentage of cases in which it occurs is really low.
