Recirculation baths and Mary’s baths: What are their differences?

A recirculation bath is a laboratory device, consisting of a water bath with a built-in water recirculation pump, an ideal equipment for any application where the placing of several samples in a water bath is required, these equipment provide a constant and reliable temperature, and work by mobilizing the liquid while providing the set temperature. They can be used together with other laboratory equipment, for example, to maintain the temperature of a water jacket, or for a rotary evaporator.

Among its characteristics we find that they can heat the water or also cool it and its temperature range ranges from -40 to 200°C. They are considered useful equipment in microbiological research, where continuous agitation is vital for cell cultures to grow effectively in liquid culture media when mixed with air.

In what applications are recirculation baths used?

  • In different trials conducted in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Education: Rotary evaporator cooling, replacement of cooling by running water, immersion small samples, photometry, chromatography systems.
  • In the industrial sector during quality control testing, sample preparation, general cooling, reaction chemistry, temperature control, semiconductor manufacturing, rheometry.
  • In the Food Industries: Refractometry.
  • Life sciences: electrophoretic cooling.
  • High temperature cooling: activates up to 150 ° C.

What is a Mary’s bath? And their applications

A water bath is laboratory equipment, consisting of a container full of hot water, which is used in order to incubate samples in water at a constant temperature for a long period of time. They are equipment used in multiple applications such as heating reagents, melting substrates or incubating cell cultures, and carrying out certain chemical reactions that occur at high temperatures.

This laboratory equipment works by supplying a uniform source of heat that allows flammable chemicals to be heated instead of an open flame to avoid contact. The different types of water baths are used depending on the application and requirements of the user, taking into account that all water baths, can be used up to 99 °C when used with water, but if you need to work with temperatures above 100 °C, oil can be used instead of water, in order to avoid the effects generated by evaporation.

Structure of a Mary’s bath

The Maria bathrooms are quite simple equipment in terms of their structure and operation, but of great importance in the laboratories, these devices have an analog or digital interface, which allows users to adjust the desired temperature. Its structure has a:

  • Tank: generally made of stainless material, which has at its bottom a set of electrical resistors, through which heat is transferred to water, which is maintained at a preselected temperature by a control device that allows selecting the temperature that is needed. The resistances of Mary’s baths can be of two types: immersive or external.
  • Impeller tray: This device works as a support for containers that are placed in the laboratory water bath. This should be placed at the bottom of the computer.
  • Deck: This is an area outside the team and covers the Maria bath. Temperature controls, which regulate and adjust the temperature constantly, are usually located here. This cover is normally made of steel and is coated with high adhesion electrostatic paint and laboratory environment resistance.
  • Thermometer: This device is used to measure water temperature.
