The deep freezer: what are its technical operating bases?

Ultra freezers, also known as -80 freezers or ultra-low temperature freezers, due to the temperature they handle, are a very common type of freezer in a wide variety of research laboratories, the reason is because they allow to preserve samples in the long term at very low temperatures, between -4 ° C and -86 ° C. They come in horizontal and vertical shape, according to the needs of the user.

Ultra-freezers are extremely useful equipment in laboratories where the storage of samples at ultra low temperatures is required, such as in molecular biology laboratories, where it is necessary to store DNA, RNA or protein samples, as a bad storage would lead to damage of the samples. The operation of these equipment is related to the presence of high power compressors.

Operation of the deep freezers

Depending on the type of system you are using, the ultrabezier may have a high-power compressor or two cascade compressors. The latter system is based on the use of cold circuits, in which the evaporator of one condenser cools the other condenser, thus the condensation of compressed gas from the first circuit is easier.

Freezers using this evaporative freezing system consist of tubular batteries positioned so that there is the greatest surface heat transfer. In the case of air circulation, this is the product of a fan with motor, the expansion of coolant is through capillary tubes. On the other hand, evaporation is possible thanks to the use of heat exchangers inside the chamber.

Uses of ultra freezers

In many laboratories there are samples that do not require long-term storage nor much less at ultra low temperatures, in these cases conventional freezers that handle temperatures from 4 to -20 ° C can be easily used, however, there are samples that need to be stored for long time at specific temperatures, in these cases the use of ultrabreeders is necessary.

For example, in molecular biology laboratories, DNA, RNA, or proteins are commonly used. If they do not have refrigeration, there is a risk of damage. There are other types of samples that even need cryogenic refrigeration, in these cases they are stored in Dewar containers with liquid nitrogen. The way to store samples inside freezers is by using specialized polymer tubes, which are stored in cold resistant racks.

General characteristics of deep freezers

Ultra freezers have a number of features and parts that allow them to function properly, from their orientation, to the materials with which it is made internally or the controllers with which it can be handled. Below are the most important features of these equipment, for further knowledge:

  • Volume: can store between 200 and 800 liters.
  • Orientation: can be horizontal or vertical, vertical are more recommended for space saving.
  • Internal structure: it has shelves to place the samples, each shelf being closed, to keep the temperature uniform.
  • Seal: placed along the perimeter of the freezer. Four-step silicone coatings are recommended, allowing better temperature maintenance.
  • Access door: it must be insulated with polyurethane, to maintain the internal temperature of the ultrabezier. It must be equipped with a security key.
  • Controllers: should be easy to use and read, as they indicate freezing parameters.
  • Wheels: Some deep freezers have rotating wheels for easy movement.
