In recent years, different types of halogen moisture analyzers have been developed. Each of them has its own advantages. The principle of moisture analyzers is based on the fact that water is a good solvent and can absorb other substances. When the sample is heated, the water evaporates and the substances that had dissolved are left behind. By measuring weight loss or change in conductivity, the moisture content of the sample can be determined very precisely.
The first moisture analyzers were developed in the 1970s. At that time, sensors based on the thermogravimetric principle (TGA) were used. In this process, the sample is first heated to a certain temperature until all moisture has evaporated. Then the temperature is increased, and weight loss is measured. The amount of moisture is then calculated based on weight loss.
And currently in Kalstein, we have halogen moisture analyzers with a temperature and time adjustment, and it measures the percentage of moisture content plus dry residue.
Types and Functions
The most common type of moisture analyser is the halogen moisture analyser. In these devices, the sample is dried by means of a halogen, which has a much higher vapor pressure and is therefore able to evaporate much more easily. Subsequently, moisture is measured by measuring weight loss or, in some cases, by measuring the change in conductivity.
Another type of moisture analyser is the capacitive moisture analyser. In these devices, the sample is dried by means of a condenser, which measures the change in the dielectric constant of the sample caused by evaporation of water.
In addition, the halogen humidity analyser type A measures air humidity using the humidity sensor. The thermometer is used to measure air temperature, and they are easy to use. On the other hand, type B is composed of a measuring chamber, a thermometer, a humidity sensor and a pressure gage. It measures the humidity of the air using the humidity sensor. The thermometer is used to measure air temperature.
The type C halogen humidity analyser measures air humidity using the humidity sensor. The pressure gage is used to measure the amount of water vapor in the air.
The advantages of moisture analyzers
The main advantage of moisture analyzers is their versatility. Thanks to the different types of sensors that can be used, such as the determination of the moisture content of food, building materials, paper or wood.
Another advantage of moisture analyzers is their speed. Because the drying process is much faster than with other methods, such as the oven drying method, the determination of the moisture content can be carried out in a very short time.
Finally, moisture analyzers are very precise devices. Since the moisture content can be determined with great precision, these devices are particularly suitable for quality control.
